Last year, I attempted a personal 100-day challenge, and it was a game-changer. My goal was to focus on writing every day, reading regularly, exercising, journaling, and even limiting mindless social media scrolling. One of the things I loved most was a practice called "morning pages"—a type of journaling that became a favourite part of my routine and something I’ll definitely talk about on our podcast and blog.
100-day challenges are my favourite. While 30-day challenges are popular and great for short-term focus, I believe 100 days is a much better timeframe for creating meaningful change. It gives you enough time to build habits, see progress, and make adjustments without feeling rushed.
Back in 2022, Rob and I both attempted a 100-day writing challenge. Rob managed to stick with it and saw fantastic results, while my attempt fell apart when I travelled to the 20Books conference in Las Vegas. Despite this, I saw how powerful even partial commitment could be, and that’s why we’re bringing the 100 Days of Writing Challenge to our community as part of our Thrive in ’25 initiative. We know how transformative this kind of commitment can be, and we want to share it with you.
Why a 100-Day Writing Challenge?
Writing can feel overwhelming, especially when you're juggling everyday demands or working on big goals like finishing a novel or preparing a book for publication. It’s easy to lose momentum or confidence, particularly when writing feels like a solitary journey. That’s where a 100-day challenge comes in—it offers the perfect blend of structure, motivation, and flexibility to help you make meaningful progress, one day at a time.
This challenge isn’t about perfection or hitting massive word counts. It’s about showing up every day and moving closer to your writing goals, no matter how small the steps may feel.
What Is the 100 Days of Writing Challenge?
The 100 Days of Writing Challenge is a commitment to work on your writing every day for 100 days. What you do each day is entirely up to you:
Write for 25 minutes, spread across your day or in one focused session.
Add 100 words to your manuscript.
Edit a chapter, brainstorm ideas, or outline your next project.
The goal is to show up consistently. It’s not about hitting arbitrary word counts but about creating a habit of steady progress. Whether you’re drafting, editing, or brainstorming, it all counts. The aim is simple: make writing a daily part of your life, whatever that looks like for you.
Why Join This Challenge?
Build a Sustainable Writing Habit
Writing every day, even for a short time, helps develop a routine. The more consistent you are, the easier it becomes to sit down and write—even on tough days.
Achieve Your Goals in Manageable Steps
Big goals like finishing a draft or editing a manuscript can feel overwhelming. The 100-day challenge encourages you to break these into smaller, achievable daily tasks, making them less intimidating.
Foster Creativity and Momentum
Writing regularly keeps your creative muscles engaged and your story fresh in your mind. Momentum is crucial, and this challenge helps you maintain it. I know from experience that even a short break from your project can throw you off. Showing up every day keeps you connected to your work.
Join a Supportive Community
Writing doesn’t have to be lonely. By participating in this challenge, you’ll join a community of like-minded writers where we’ll celebrate every win—no matter how small. Even writing ten words is better than none, and we’ll cheer you on every step of the way.
Thrive in All Areas of Life
This challenge isn’t just about writing—it’s about finding balance. It’s about learning to prioritise your creative goals alongside the rest of your life and thriving in all areas.
How It Works
Set Your Goals
Decide what you want to achieve in the 100 days. Your goal could be:
Writing a certain number of words each day.
Completing a draft.
Editing a specific number of chapters.
Simply showing up for your writing every day.
The key is to set realistic goals that fit your current life demands.
Track Your Progress
Use a journal, spreadsheet, or digital tracker to log your daily writing. We’re considering setting up a shared Google document so participants can track progress together.
Commit to Writing Every Day
Even if you don’t have time to write words, you can reflect on your story, brainstorm, research, or outline. The important thing is to engage with your project daily and keep the momentum going.
Celebrate Small Wins
Every day you show up for your writing is a win. Reflect on your progress weekly, reward yourself, and celebrate every effort—whether it’s 10 words or 1,000. Small steps add up over time.
